Former Vice President Al Gore and the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to spread awareness of man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures needed to counteract it.

Gore, who won an Academy Award this year for his film “An Inconvenient Truth,” a documentary on global warming, had been widely expected to win the prize.

Climate change has moved high on the international agenda this year. The U.N. climate panel has been releasing reports, talks are set to resume on a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol, and there is concern about the melting Arctic.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said global warming, “may induce large-scale migration and lead to greater competition for the earth’s resources. Such changes will place particularly heavy burdens on the world’s most vulnerable countries. There may be increased danger of violent conflicts and wars, within and between states.”

Jan Egeland, a Norwegian peace mediator and former U.N. undersecretary for humanitarian affairs, also called climate change more than an environmental issue.

“It is a question of war and peace,” said Egeland, now director of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs in Oslo. “We’re already seeing the first climate wars, in the Sahel belt of Africa.” He said nomads and herders are in conflict with farmers because the changing climate has brought drought and a shortage of fertile lands.

But Al might have a few problems with his possession of the Oscar he received for his fantasy movie “An Inconvenient Truth.” The movie, an alleged documentary, proves that some Al’s “truths” were not facts .

A conservative think-tank in New Zealand has written to the president of the America’s Academy Awards asking that the Oscar awarded to the director of an Inconvenient Truth be taken back.

Former New Zealand MP Dr Muriel Newman, director of web-based think-tank the New Zealand Centre for Political Research, said she had taken the measure in response to a British High Court ruling Thursday.

She said she emailed Academy president Sid Ganis and executive director Bruce Davis with the request on Friday morning.

A British judge ruled an Inconvenient Truth, whose director Davis Guggenheim won an Academy Award for best documentary feature, contained scientific errors.

The judge said the film could be shown in British schools, although it must have guidance notes to prevent political indoctrination.

The controversial documentary starred former US vice president Al Gore talking about the perils of global warming.

“The truth, as inconvenient as it is to Al Gore, is that his so-called documentary contained critical distortions that are quite contrary to the principles of good documentary journalism.

“Good documentaries should be factually correct. Clearly this documentary is not,” a statement from Newman said.

The Democrat majority in the US House of Representatives passed a deficient energy bill. With nuclear power, clean coal technology among other things to help make us energy independent, the Democrats, in all their omniscience decided to go green. In other words, get back to the communal life the Dems enjoyed in the 60′s to lead us into the twenty-first century.

You just can’t make these things up.

One of the many initiatives introduced for the bill was a Bike ‘Commuter Benefit’ and carbon audits proposed by Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore)

Today Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore), a member of the Ways and Means Committee, announced the inclusion of three of his environmental initiatives in the Committee’s energy bill. The Ways and Means energy bill includes the closure of the Hummer Tax Loophole, a Carbon Audit of the tax code and a Bike Commuter Benefit.

“I am thrilled the Chairman has included these important environmental provisions in our energy bill,” said Congressman Blumenauer. “We are setting a high mark not only for our committee, but for the larger energy bill that will be on the House Floor in July. The provisions I worked hard to include in this bill – closing the Hummer Tax Loophole, doing a Carbon Audit of the tax code, and providing bikers with commuter benefits – are all important steps that move our country in a greener direction.

“Doing a Carbon Audit of the tax code will help us identify ways to reduce emissions and give us great opportunity for reform. It’s a leg up for decision makers who will have the information they need to be able to formulate tax policies that make sense fiscally and environmentally.

“Providing cyclists with a fringe benefit – like those that employers can give employees for parking and transit – will level the playing field for people who burn calories instead of gasoline. Not only does the benefit encourage people to save energy and stay fit, but it minimizes congestion on the roads.”

The Commuter Benefit for bikers amends section 132(f) of the IRS code to include “bicycles” in the definition of transportation covered by fringe benefits. Included in the Ways and Means energy bill is a benefit of $20/month for those employees who bike to work, which is a clean, healthy and efficient mode of transportation. The provision is based on H.R. 1498, legislation introduced by Blumenauer earlier this year.

Blumeauer’s Congressional Bike Caucus:

Every morning in Washington, Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) rides his rusty red-orange Trek bicycle to work on Capitol Hill, a reminder of one of the first things he did when he came to Congress in 1996: create a bike caucus.

With 165 members, the bipartisan Congressional Bike Caucus promotes the use of bicycles as a substitute for cars — a way to exercise, reduce fossil fuel emissions and improve travel patterns. The caucus shepherded $4 billion for trails, bike paths and pedestrian facilities in a big transportation spending bill in the last Congress.

“I have saved hundreds of hours of time. I have burned thousands and thousands of calories instead of gallons of petroleum and, after 10 years, have probably saved $50,000,” said Blumenauer, who also chairs the Congressional Trails Caucus.

The bike caucus is just one of the zany-sounding groups that lawmakers have created on Capitol Hill to advance niche interests in Congress. There’s no trick to creating a caucus — or “congressional member organization” — in the House, where it takes just a letter to the Administration Committee. Nearly 300 have registered. The Senate has far fewer groups, and they don’t register at all.

SCIENTISTS have created the world’s first schizophrenic mice in an attempt to gain a better understanding of the illness.

It is believed to be the first time an animal has been genetically engineered to have a mental illness. Until now they have been bred only for research into physical conditions such as heart disease. It will allow researchers to study the disease and develop treatments using a limitless supply of laboratory animals.

Animal rights campaigners have condemned the research, saying that it is morally repugnant to create an animal doomed to mental suffering.

The mice were created by modifying their DNA to mimic a mutant gene first found in a Scottish family with a high incidence of schizophrenia, which affects about one in every 100 people. The mice’s brains were found to have features similar to those of humans with schizophrenia, such as depression and hyperactivity.

“These mutant mice may provide an important new tool for further study of the combinations of factors that underlie mental illnesses like schizophrenia and mood disorders,” said Takatoshi Hikida, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, a leading researcher.

The egg cells of mice were genetically modified by inserting a gene associated with schizophrenia into their DNA. The eggs were fertilised and grown into viable baby mice using surrogate mothers.

Animal Aid, a campaign group, said rodents were not a reliable way of modelling human disease.

But the off-spring of The Goracle proved me wrong. Al Gore’s son (Al Gore the 3rd) was picked up for speeding in a Toyota Prius…. Oh… and was inebriated too. A.G. the 3rd was allegedly drunk and in possession of other illegal substances.

Of course, this type of arrest isn’t foreign to the 3rd .

Al Gore III, son of the former vice president, was arrested in California early Wednesday morning for suspicion of possessing marijuana and prescription drugs.

Gore III was allegedly driving a blue Toyota Prius at speeds over 100 mph when he was pulled over around 2:15 a.m. on the San Diego freeway south of Los Angeles. Smelling marijuana, police searched the car and found less than one ounce of marijuana and prescription drugs Xanax, Valium, Vicodin and Adderall, Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jim Armormino said. The last pharmaceutical is a treatment for attention deficit disorder.

“He does not have a prescription for any of those drugs,” Amormino said.

Gore, 24, was released from a men’s jail in Santa Ana after posting $20,000 bail.

This is the second time he was arrested on a marijuana possession charge. Police in Montgomery County, Md., pulled over Gore in December 2003 and noticed the smell of pot. Police were also tipped off by the open windows and sunroof despite the freezing temperature.

(Sheryl)Crow (4/19, Springfield, Tenn.): I have spent the better part of this tour trying to come up with easy ways for us all to become a part of the solution to global warming. Although my ideas are in the earliest stages of development, they are, in my mind, worth investigating. One of my favorites is in the area of forest conservation which we heavily rely on for oxygen. I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting. Now, I don’t want to rob any law-abiding American of his or her God-given rights, but I think we are an industrious enough people that we can make it work with only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where 2 to 3 could be required.

This uttered before she embarks to her next destination on her private jet.  The Hypocrisy of the global warming alarmists.

8/02/07-I had to resurrect this post with the global warming fallacy being pushed ever so aggressively again.

Polar Bears, because of toxic waste chemicals such as the ones used to manufacture products like Scotchgard, are causing polar bears to become “multisexual” in genetic makeup. In other words the bears are hermaphrodite.

Wildlife researchers have found new evidence that Arctic polar bears, already gravely threatened by the melting of their habitat because of global warming, are being poisoned by chemical compounds commonly used in Europe and North America to reduce the flammability of household furnishings like sofas, clothing and carpets.

A team of scientists from Canada, Alaska, Denmark and Norway is sounding the alarm about the flame retardants, known as polybrominated diphenyls, or PBDEs, saying that significant deposits have recently been found in the fatty tissues of polar bears, especially in eastern Greenland and Norway’s Svalbard islands.

Studies are still being carried out on what impact the chemicals might be having on the bears, but tests on laboratory animals such as mice indicate that their effects can be considerable, attacking the sex and thyroid glands, motor skills and brain function.

There is also evidence that compounds similar to the PBDEs have contributed to a surprisingly high rate of hermaphroditism in polar bears. About one in 50 female bears on Svalbard has both male and female sex organs, a phenomenon scientists link directly to the effects of pollution.

“The Arctic is now a chemical sink,” declared Colin Butfield, a campaign leader for the Worldwide Fund for Nature, which last month indicated that killer whales in the Arctic were also suffering from elevated levels of contamination with fire retardants as well as other man-made compounds. “Chemicals from products that we use in our homes every day are contaminating Arctic wildlife.” …

What wasn’t publicized about the study is that the Polar Bears are now able to walk through fire without out even a hint of anything more than a light suntan. They are also attracted to marsupials.
