Chappaquiddick Thirty-Nine Years Ago July 19, 1969

Ted Kennedy With The Controversial Neck Brace July 19,1969

Saturday is the 39th anniversary of the death of Mary Jo Kopechne on Chappaquidick Island.  A day that Mass. Senator Ted Kennedy would rather forget.

“I found it hard to believe the Senator had been in a major automobile accident. His face bore no traces of any marks. He never sat down or appeared in any kind of physical discomfort. If he had been injured, in shock, or confused, nothing of it lingered in our meeting, to my observation.”

- Police Chief Dominick Arena -

The day that Ted Kennedy got away with manslaughter.

“the most brilliant cover-up ever achieved in a nation where investigative procedures are well developed and where the principles of equal justice prevail, at least during some of those moments where people are watching.”

~ The Last Kennedy by Robert Sherrill

On July 25, seven days after the incident, Kennedy entered a plea of guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury. He received a sentence of two months in jail, which was suspended, and lost his driving license for one year.

Later that day he announced on television that it was “indefensible that he had not reported the incident to police immediately.

He explained his behavior:

“ I was overcome, I’m frank to say, by a jumble of emotions – grief, fear, doubt, exhaustion, panic, confusion and shock. ”

He denied that he had been engaged in “immoral conduct” with Kopechne, or that he had been driving under the influence of alcohol. He wondered openly “whether some awful curse actually did hang over all the Kennedys”.

The Liberal MSM continues to adore this Lion of the Left:

Kennedy was selected by Time as one of “America’s 10 Best Senators”; the magazine noted that he had “amassed a titanic record of legislation affecting the lives of virtually every man, woman and child in the country” and that “by the late 1990s, the liberal icon had become such a prodigious cross-aisle dealer that Republican leaders began pressuring party colleagues not to sponsor bills with him”.

I respectfully disagree.
